Longitudinal Dispersion Coefficients within Turbulent and Transitional Pipe Flow

چکیده
The longitudinal dispersion coefficient is used to describe the change in characteristics of a solute cloud, as it travels along the longitudinal axis of a pipe. Taylor [1954] proposed a now classical expression to predict the longitudinal dispersion coefficient within turbulent pipe flow. However, experimental work has shown significant deviation from his prediction for Re < 20000. This paper presents experimental results from tracer studies conducted within the range 2000 < Re < 50000, from which longitudinal dispersion coefficients have been determined. Initial results are also presented for a numerical model that aims to predict the longitudinal dispersion coefficient over the same range of Reynolds numbers.

Recurrence of Travelling Waves in Transitional Pipe Flow
The recent theoretical discovery of families of travelling wave solutions in pipe flow (Faisst & Eckhardt 2003; Wedin & Kerswell 2004; Hof et al. 2004) at Reynolds numbers lower than the transitional range naturally raises the question of their relevance to the turbulent transition process. Here a series of numerical experiments are conducted in which we look for the spatial signature of these ...
متن کاملTransition to turbulence in a concentric annular pipe
In this study the pressure-drop, mean and rms axial velocity data are measured using a differential pressure transducer and a laser Doppler anemometer for the flow of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids in a concentric annular pipe (radius ratio =0.5) at various Reynolds numbers encompassing the laminar, transitional and turbulent regimes. Three different fluids are utilized; a semi-rigid shear-...
متن کاملDistinct large-scale turbulent-laminar states in transitional pipe flow.
When fluid flows through a channel, pipe, or duct, there are two basic forms of motion: smooth laminar motion and complex turbulent motion. The discontinuous transition between these states is a fundamental problem that has been studied for more than 100 yr. What has received far less attention is the large-scale nature of the turbulent flows near transition once they are established. We have c...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Turbulent Subsonic Compressible Flow through Rectangular Microchannel
In this study, turbulent compressible gas flow in a rectangular micro-channel is numerically investigated. The gas flow assumed to be in the subsonic regime up to Mach number about 0.7. Five low and high Reynolds number RANS turbulence models are used for modeling the turbulent flow. Two types of mesh are generated depending on the employed turbulence model. The computations are performed for R...
متن کامل3. Mixing in Rivers: Turbulent Diffusion and Dispersion
In previous chapters we considered the processes of advection and molecular diffusion and have seen some example problems with so called “turbulent diffusion” coefficients, where we use the same governing equations, but with larger diffusion (mixing) coefficients. In natural rivers, a host of processes lead to a non-uniform velocity field, which allows mixing to occur much faster than by molecu...
